SUGOCA card

What is a SUGOCA card?
A SUGOCA card is a smart card which is used by simply placing the card on a reader at a ticket gate when out and about. It is equipped with an electronic money function and can be used for shopping as well. If you have just one SUGOCA card, it can be used on the Fukuoka City Subway Lines, as well as on the Nishitetsu trains and buses. It is also valid within the SUICA area in Tokyo, Niigata and Sendai.
How to purchase a SUGOCA card and for how much?

◎ Unregistered SUGOCA cards
・These cards can be purchased at certain automatic ticket machines or at the MIDORI NO MADOGUCHI(JR Travel Service Center).
・The price is 2000 yen including a 500 yen deposit.
Up to 1500 yen can be used for travel fares or e-money.

◎ SUGOCA cards for childrens
・These cards can be purchased at the JR Travel Service Center.
・The price is 2000 yen including a 500 yen deposit.(*1)
Up to 1500 yen can be used for travel fares or e-money.
・An application sheet must be filled out and you must present proper ID upon purchase.
・The cards are issued with an expiration date.(*2)
・Other persons, such as your parents, for instance, can purchase a card on your behalf, but it can be used only on your own behalf.
*1 Deposit
500 yen is placed on deposit at your first purchase or other use of the card. The SUGOCA card is a rechargeable card and the deposit system has been introduced to avoid throwaways.
The deposit will be refunded when you return your card.
*2 Expiration date
The expiration dates for SUGOCA cards for children is set on March 31 of the fiscal year when he/she turns twelve years old. (If his/her birthday happens to be on April 1, date used will be March 31, the day before the birthday.)
The card cannot be used at an automatic gate after expiring. It can be converted into a registered SUGOCA card for adults
How to purchase a SUGOCA card and for how much?

◎ Riding trains
・Just touch the SUGOCA card to the card reader with a blue light at an automatic gate.
The fare will be automatically calculated and deducted from the balance at the station where you get off. (The child fare is automatically deducted when using a child’s SUGOCA card.)
・If the card reader fails to scan your card correctly, it will make a sound “pi-pi-pi” and the scanning portion of the reader will turn red. Please reposition your card on the scanner properly.
・When the balance is insufficient or the record of entry and exit is not correct, the reader makes a sound “Piiii” and the scanning portion of the reader turns red, and you are not able to pass through the gate. Please contact a station staff member.
・Upon purchase, your card comes preloaded with 1500 yen. If the balance remaining on the card is less than the base fare, you cannot enter the gate.

・The SUGOCA can be used not only for transportation but for shopping at convenience stores, station kiosks and restaurants, etc.
・The Just inform the staff member in the store you want to pay with the SUGOCA card. After verifying the purchase amount displayed, just touch the SUGOCA card to the reader properly. Your payment has been successfully completed if the reader makes the sound “pi-pi.” You can check the balance remaining on your card after the transaction at a digital terminal.
* If your card fails to be read, the reader will make a sound “pi-pi-pi-pi-pi.” In such a case, please place it on the reader again properly.

◎ Recharging the card
・The SUGOCA card can be recharged and used as many times as desired.
・It can be charged up to a maximum of 20,000 yen at ticket vending machines, fare adjustment machines, and charging machines displaying the SUGOCA logo on the right. Recharging at the JR Travel Service Center is not currently available.
・Only yen may be used to recharge a card. A credit card cannot be used to recharge the card.
How to purchase a SUGOCA card and for how much?
・Refunds are offered at JR Travel Service Centers at stations within the areas in which the SUGOCA card can be used.
Refunds cannot be offered at ticket gates or fare adjustment offices.
・When the card is returned, the deposit of 500 yen will be returned along with any remaining unused money on the card.
There is a charge of 210 yen to return a card, which is deducted from the total.
If there is less than 210 yen on the card, only the deposit of 500 yen will be refunded.
